Associated Engineering received two Awards of Excellence from the Consulting Engineers of Alberta at the 2005 Showcase Awards. In the Natural Resources, Mining, and Industrial category, we received an Award of Excellence for our design of Canadian Natural Resources’ Horizon Access Road and Bridge near Fort McMurray, Alberta; in the Environmental category, we received top honours for the Big Lake Basin Drainage Study in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Horizon Access Road and Bridge includes nine kilometres of roadway through forest and a 262 metre long, four-span bridge over a steep river valley. Working with the design-build team including Kiewit Management, AMEC Earth and Environmental, and AMEC Infrastructure, we designed and constructed the road and bridge in a ten-month period (see page 8 for story). Our team’s innovative design approach provided a cost-effective and constructible design, which accommodated the tight project schedule, access constraints, unstable river valley slopes, and environmental issues.

Development in the Big Lake Drainage Basin in Edmonton created issues regarding stormwater runoff. The Big Lake drainage study involved working with several stakeholders, including seven municipalities and Alberta Environment and Transportation to build consensus. Through open dialogue and cooperation, the project team facilitated development of solutions that addressed issues and met goals of all stakeholders. The study recommended that floodplains be protected and preserved and gave criteria for stormwater management in the basin.

Associated Engineering also received Awards of Merit for the Red Deer Water Treatment Plant project (see page 12 for story) and the West Calgary Storm Sewer Relief Project – Killarney Dry Pond E, a project with AMEC Earth & Environmental.
