| Associated Engineering
supports South Asia Tsunami
Relief Efforts
The South Asian tsunami disaster has affected many of
our
colleagues and associates. To assist in relief operations
and to
help finance rebuilding in the affected areas, Associated
Engineering has made a corporate donation to the Canadian
branch of RedR—Registered Engineers for Disaster
Relief.
A non-profit organization, RedR Canada is part of
an international
organization that provides disaster relief around the world.
RedR
trains and sends engineers and other skilled relief workers
to
disaster-affected areas to assist in relief efforts. See
RedR
Canada’s website at www.redr.ca for more information.
B.C. Engineers receive
Designated Structural
Engineer status

David Harvey |

Dejan Erdevicki |
Senior Structural Engineers, David Harvey, M.Sc., P.Eng.
and
Dejan Erdevicki, P.Eng., recently received the Designated
Structural Engineer (Struct. Eng.) grade of membership
from the
Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists
of B.C.
(APEGBC).
Starting in 2007, professionals wishing to become
the Structural
Engineer-of-Record for a design to Part 3 of the B.C.
Building
Code will be required to obtain the Struct. Eng. designation.
To
attain the Struct. Eng. designation, candidates must
have more
than six years experience in structural engineering,
be licensed as
a Professional Engineer in B.C., and pass an in-depth
structural
exam as well as a B.C.-specific structural exam.
The Struct.
Eng. grade of membership commenced in 2003.
To date, only 26 professional engineers in B.C. have
attained this
designation.
Congratulations David Harvey and Dejan Erdevicki!
Sustainability by Design
Community leaders and professionals are adopting and implementing
sustainable design practices to promote sustainable development
and environmental stewardship. Professional societies such
as the
United States Green Building Council have established Leadership
in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). LEED is a voluntary
building rating system based on accepted energy and environmental
principles. LEED provides industry standards, design practices,
and
guidelines to meet specific environmental and energy design
requirements.
Recognizing the importance of sustainable
development, Associated
Engineering takes a leadership role in incorporating
sustainable
design principles on our projects. In 2003, two of our
projects for the
Greater Vancouver Regional District received the Professional
Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. Sustainability Award:
the Little
Mountain Reservoir Reconstruction and the Cloverdale
Sanitary
Sewer Overflow Storage Facility. These projects incorporated
reuse
and recycling of materials, use of EcoSmart concrete,
energy efficient
processes, natural drainage, noise and emissions controls
during
construction, and public information sessions and public
input.
In our continued support of sustainable design, we
have recently
joined the Canada Green Building Council, which heads
LEED
initiatives in Canada. This will allow us to keep up-to-date
on
initiatives in sustainable design, new tools, and design
practices.
Several members of the Associated Engineering
team have received
LEED accreditation. Our LEED Accredited Professionals
include
Barrie Addison in Calgary, Cameron Braun in Edmonton,
as well as
Simeon Dee, Paul Dufault, and Manjit Neger in Burnaby.
These staff
bring their knowledge of LEED and their wealth of experience
in their
respective disciplines of mechanical and environmental
engineering
to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions.
Remembering Ken Fudge
Associated Engineering mourns the loss
of a good friend and
colleague, Ken Fudge, who passed away suddenly earlier
this year.
Ken joined Associated Engineering in 1977 as a surveyor.
He
remained a valuable asset to our company for 28 years,
playing a
significant role in many of our major
projects, including the B.C. Place
Development, the container terminals
at DeltaPort, the SkyTrain system, and
the Vancouver International Airport
Runway projects.
Ken was a committed and conscientious
employee and a very capable
surveyor who knew construction. He
always shared his knowledge and
experience, and at the same time,
was inquisitive and keen to increase
his knowledge. Ken grew from a
surveyor to a very capable
construction inspector. He was also a
cherished friend and mentor.
However, Ken’s most treasured
role in his life was that of father to
Sarah and Noel and husband to Kathleen. It was our privilege
to
have known Ken. We will miss him very much. |
