Associated Engineering's Saskatchewan operation receives the Consulting Engineers of Saskatchewan Brian Eckel Award of Merit
At the 2008 Consulting Engineers of Saskatchewan Awards presentation, Associated Engineering received the Brian Eckel Award of Merit for our design of the Resort Village of Shields’ Trenchless Water Distribution System.
Associated Engineering was retained by the Resort Village of Shields, Saskatchewan to design, tender, and supervise construction of a water distribution system for the village. The project proved to be challenging on several levels: narrow right-of-ways, encroaching lot development, landscaping in the right-of-ways, and limited access for construction. In addition, the community was serviced by a full suite of shallow utilities including a non-potable irrigation system, telecommunications, and natural gas which limited the available options for locating the water line.

Communication was the key to the success of the project. The Village Council took an active roll in ensuring the community was prepared and knew what type of disruptions to expect during construction. As a result, the residents, Village Council, contractor, and Associated Engineering had very open lines of communication to facilitate the construction process.
Innovative directional drilling technology was employed during construction of the watermains, as well as for the service connections ensuring minimal disturbance of the roads and the residents’ landscaping.
One short year later, it is difficult to tell that an entire water distribution system was installed on every street and to every
resident, providing safe drinking water to the entire village.
A partnering approach between Associated Engineering, the contractor, and the Village Council ensured that the project achieved the mutual goals of minimal residential disruption, limited disturbance, and maximum construction efficiency. The project was completed on schedule, and significantly under budget due to the savings in road work associated with open trench installation.
Congratulations to all who worked on the project.
