New Engineering Production Manager enhances efficiency and project delivery
In 2008, our President & CEO, Kerry Rudd appointed Barry Vallance,
P.Eng. to his new role of Engineering Production Manager. In the
last 12 months, Barry has taken on the responsibility for assessing
our engineering systems and improving or developing new proce-
dures and guidelines to enhance efficiency and project delivery, and
produce consistent, quality products.
Our systems refer to any procedure, guideline, or process that we
use in our day-to-day efforts to conduct business, execute projects,
produce drawings, specifications, reports and proposals, manage
documents, and communicate.
With new systems comes the need to educate staff in the form of
in-house and off-site training. Barry is involved in the development
and implementation of various training modules including:
- Quality management
- Contract law
- Environmental procedures
- Design standards
- Records management
- File naming conventions
- Specifications writing
- Drawing production
- Report writing
- CAD standards
- Document authentication
Barry has visited offices across the company, providing presentations
to reinforce the company’s long-standing principles for quality
management.
Training sessions include
AE’s guidelines for quality
assurance. Barry advocates
involving reviewers in
design work and accurately
defining project needs early
in the design process. Barry
has been creating and
encouraging the use of
checklists to simplify design
development and the quality
review/audit processes. The
process encourages involv-
ing senior engineers and
specialists for review early
in a project to develop the
most appropriate solution
and avoid potentially costly re-work later in a project.
