Columbia Street Pump Station wins Award of Merit at 2009 Consulting Engineers of British Columbia Awards

Associated Engineering received an Award of Merit for our design of the Columbia Street Pump Station project at the Consulting Engineers of BC annual awards ceremony in March.

Associated Engineering provided design and construction services for the aestheticallypleasing, new Columbia Street Pump Station. Nestled in the heart of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside neighbourhood, the pump station demonstrates all that comprises a successful project of this type – design excellence and innovation, collaborative design, and outreach with the community.

In its urban setting, the site faced many constraints, from the narrow footprint that only allowed a building 5.5 metres wide, to the requirements that all surrounding functions, the existing pump station and sewer system, the streets, and the adjacent railway, remain operable. Marshalling of construction- related traffic was critical in this busy downtown setting.

Design innovations include Metro Vancouver's first applications of a structural, water-tight shotcrete foundation wall and a self-cleaning, trenchstyle pump station wet well, which helped minimize space requirements. Sustainable by design, the self-cleaning wet-well works on the basis of gravity flow to produce cleaning velocities using minimal energy to function.

The collaborative design process included close coordination between engineers, technologists, the owner, architects and the public artist, and consultation with stakeholders and the public. The collaborative process resulted in a facility with aesthetic appeal, sympathetic to the historical and cultural context of the neighbourhood. Congratulations to all staff who worked on this project!
