Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver

On Friday March 6, 2009, the Burnaby office Bowling Team dressed up as aliens and headed off to the local bowling alley to "boldly bowl where no one has bowled before" at the annual Bowl for Big Brother's Charity Bowlathon.

This year the team raised $532 to support the Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver Foundation. Thank you to all the participants and to Keith Kohut for organizing the Associated Engineering team.

AE Big Bike Riders raise over $7000 for
Heart and Stroke Foundation

Every year the Heart and Stroke Foundation's Big Bike hits the streets of Canada, making its way through more than 200 communities across nine provinces to raise funds to support vital life-saving heart and stroke research.

Riding a BIG 30 seat bike, teams of 29 riders pedal through their communities raising funds and attention along the way.

This year, our Lethbridge team raised close to $5,500, well over their goal of $2000! The team rode the Big Bike around Henderson Park, approximately four kilometres, in 25 minutes.

Our St. Catharines office also entered a Big Bike team. This was their second year riding the Big Bike. They rode around a big local mall, doing a circuit of the parking lot following the mall's security vehicle which ran interference at the intersections.

The team, comprising Jeremy Stortz, Christian Concolino, Kathy Capecchi, Alison Young, Lindsay Mooradian, Jenn Disher, Matt Anderson, Mike Abraham, and Danah Ashcroft plus family and friends, raised $1,750.

Edmonton office "Canstruction" design/build team offers up giant Kraft dinner and raises $1,235 for the Food Bank
This year, the Edmonton AE Young Professional Team participated in the 2nd Annual Canstruction Edmonton Design/Build Competition on May 7, 2009. In this challenge, engineering firms compete to build structures out of cans, which are then donated to the Food Bank.

The AE team constructed their "CANDiner" Structure to resemble a giant box of Kraft Dinner (2.4 metres tall) with a plate filled with Kraft Dinner.

The sculpture also included a bottle of ketchup, a fork, and a knife. The team raised $1,235 and donated 2,100 cans of food to the Food Bank. The total weight of the food was 784 kilograms.

Team members included Jackie Badry, Andre Blanchard, Elizabeth DeVries, Scott Kusalik, Eileen McGregor, Diego Mejia, Maureen Nakonechny, Phyllis Obst, Marie-Eve Reynaud, Gerald Ruta, Tara Sherman, and Juliana Tang.

Associated Engineering raises $21,986 for
the Canadian Cancer Society

Led by Bert Munro, Vice President & General Manager of our Saskatchewan operation, Associated Engineering has set a new record for the annual Canadian Cancer Society's campaign at the ‘Relay for Life' held on June 12, 2009.

The Canadian Cancer Society advises that we are heroes again! Our target of $19,000 was surpassed with a final total of $21,986 which will fund research, development, and support for those affected by this debilitating group of diseases. Bert tells us, "We are working smarter, using our e-mail system and our many business contacts to spread the word which, in turn, has increased our totals."

A couple of incentives were used to increase awareness, create enjoyment, and help boost fundraising. Sam King, the draw winner from the sale of tickets at the company annual general meeting in Calgary, won a GPS. The set of golf clubs and golf bag were drawn for from those personal or corporate donations of $250 or $500 respectively. The winner was Dario Gnoato of Peter Kiewit & Sons of Saskatoon.

Thank you to all participants.

new fetal heart monitor for the David Thompson Health Region

Associated Engineering's Red Deer office participated in Red Deer's North Hill Inn's Merchants Challenge, one of many activities during the city's Westerner Days event. The merchant challenge included a relay, barrel race, and even bed making. All proceeds from the BBQ and events were donated to the David Thompson Health Region to purchase a new fetal heart monitor. Our Red Deer team raised close to $9,800 towards this purchase and the two teams they entered came in first and second place!
