Terrestrial Ecologist/Project Manager [Full Time]

We are currently searching for a Terrestrial Ecologist/Project Manager in our Vernon office.

The successful candidate will have a high level of scientific skill, a drive to pursue new and interesting projects, natural people skills, and a genuine desire to support the development of other professionals. You will be responsible for scientific and regulatory leadership, project management, mentoring technical staff, strategic planning, and business development in a dynamic working environment. Specifically, you will be working with the Environmental Assessment & Planning team to:

  • Conduct baseline studies and impact assessments, and develop mitigation recommendations for wildlife and terrestrial habitats, sensitive ecosystems and vegetation in a variety of client sectors
  • Prepare high quality scientific and technical reports, including regulatory documents
  • Manage projects, including project scoping and budgeting, planning, client liaison, technical leadership, quality assurance and quality control, managing inter-disciplinary project teams, and project administration
  • Lead projects through federal, provincial, and municipal regulatory processes
  • Train and mentor junior and intermediate staff in technical skills, regulatory processes, and business development
  • Develop and manage relationships with regulatory agencies as well as new and existing clients in industry, government, and First Nations
  • Lead business development activities, including strategic planning, managing and writing proposals, meeting with clients, and presenting at or attending external events (e.g., conferences, workshops).


Candidates should have the following qualifications:

  • Graduate degree from a post-secondary accredited educational institution
  • Professional registration (e.g., R.P.Bio., P.Ag.)
  • Minimum 8 years of consulting experience
  • Scientific expertise in vegetation inventory, wildlife inventory and wildlife habitat assessment, and species at risk; and a solid understanding of data resources and tools available for British Columbia
  • Current understanding of provincial, federal and local legislation, including CEAA, SARA, Fisheries Act, BCEAA, BC Water Act, BC Wildlife Act, and experience leading projects through regulatory processes
  • Practical experience in impact assessment, including project scoping, qualitative and quantitative assessment of effects, evaluation of residual and cumulative effects, and mitigation
  • Project management experience including effective budgeting and scheduling, leading a team through field investigations, data management and analysis, and reporting
  • Field experience with an awareness of safe work procedures and hazard assessments, and formal safety training is an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for a diversity of lay and technical audiences
  • Ability and desire to work collaboratively, both in a lead and support role, with other environmental professionals.
