Bridge Rehabilitation & Retrofit
Share
The City of Edmonton retained Associated Engineering to complete a bridge condition assessment and a rehabilitation strategy report for the Duggan Bridge.
The scope of work also included tendering and construction management services for the bridge rehabilitation in 2017, as well as preliminary design, detailed design, and construction management services for the bridge replacement in 2021.
- Duggan Bridge was originally a concrete arch structure carrying two lanes of traffic and a sidewalk on each side
- The replacement structure is a steel single-span semi-integral bridge with haunched girders
- The bridge carries two lanes of traffic, a sidewalk, and a 4.2m wide shared-use-path, complete with a pedestrian lookout at the midspan

Project Highlights
48 metres
Length
Duggan Bridge is located along Saskatchewan Drive within the City of Edmonton and crosses a local service road. The structure is located within Edmonton’s River Valley network and construction was required to meet stringent environmental conditions. The structure is also located directly south of the downtown core, providing aesthetic views from the bridge deck. Three options were considered for the bridge replacement: a 48 metre single-single span with haunched steel girders, a 64 metre three-span with steel girders, and a modern concrete arch. Because of the similarity of the bridge spans, the 48 metre single-span semi-integral bridge with a haunched steel superstructure was chosen.
