Associated Engineering provided concept design, bridge and site planning, detailed design services, and construction inspection for a new foot bridge over the Maligne River in Jasper National Park.
A previous suspension bridge, which was damaged in flooding in 2012, was heavily used by visitors–up to 2,000 visitors per day.
Bridge planning addressed various goals of the National Park and, in particular, the environmental and aesthetic aspects of the river site, the fit with the bridge surroundings, and enhancement of trail users’ experience. Timber was identified as a possible structural material both as a cost effective option and as an appropriate fit with the natural environment of the river, park, and walking trails.
The innovation brought by Associated Engineering during the design phase resulted in a unique bridge that provided the important aesthetic qualities demanded by the client, while meeting the budget requirements and constructability challenges. The new bridge is sure to become a landmark in Jasper National Park.
