Associated Engineering requalifies as a Platinum Club member of Canada’s Best Managed Companies

We’re excited to announce that we have once again been named one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies and retained our Platinum Club status in this prestigious award program that recognizes privately-owned Canadian companies making significant and ongoing contributions within Canada’s business landscape.

Canada’s Best Managed Companies program evaluates organizations on their leadership in the areas of strategy, culture and commitment, apabilities, and innovation, governance and financial performance. Every year, hundreds of entrepreneurial companies compete for this designation in a rigorous and independent evaluation process.

“To become a Best Managed Platinum Club winner is nothing short of remarkable. Their continued adaptability in an era of uncertainty sets the standard for how to overcome new barriers and demonstrate resiliency at the highest levels,” said Derrick Dempster, Partner, Deloitte Private
and Co-Leader, Canada’s Best Managed Companies program. “These companies truly impact how Canada is viewed on the world stage when it comes to the success of private business.”

Richard Simpson appointed Senior Vice President, Environmental

Associated Engineering is pleased to announce the promotion of Richard Simpson, M.Sc., RPF to the position of Senior Vice President, Environmental, effective May 1, 2025. In his new role, Richard will provide leadership in marketing, service delivery, and technical development of staff in our Environmental Practice. He will also support business development efforts and cross-discipline project delivery for clients.

Richard holds a Diploma in Renewable Resources Technology from the British Columbia Institute of Technology, as well as Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Alberta in Forest Management. A Professional Forester, Richard specializes in regulatory approvals and environmental planning for major projects. He has worked on major projects, such as Edmonton’s Valley Line LRT and Capital Line LRT, West Calgary Ring Road, Deerfoot Trail Improvement project, and the Acadia Irrigation Project.

Richard has a proven track record of navigating complex environmental requirements on major projects. He excels at integration on multi-discipline projects and working across geographies and offices. Recently, under Richard’s guidance as Environmental Lead, our team received a Minister’s Award from Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors for our innovative approach to contamination management, which saved the government $88 million on the Deerfoot Trail Improvement project.

Richard started his career with Associated in 2013, as part of the Edmonton environmental team (then Summit Environmental Consultants), after working for a decade on regional cumulative effects and forest management planning projects across Western Canada. He transferred to Calgary to take on the role of Regional Manager in 2017, later becoming the Division Manager of the Calgary and Saskatchewan teams.

In addition to his management and project roles, Richard has served on our Environmental Board, presented at many of our capacity building seminars, and supported development of our flexible work arrangements and health and safety system. Richard also supports the various environmental committees as a part of the Transportation Association of Canada.
