The City of Airdrie retained Associated Environmental to complete environmental oversight and soil testing during the excavation of an unregistered historical landfill, located beneath the Main Street roadway. The excavation was conducted to remove refuse from the historical landfill footprint and was completed in three stages.

For each stage, Associated was responsible for directing the disposal of refuse and contaminated soils, collecting confirmatory soil samples from the walls and base of the excavation, submitting soil samples to an analytical laboratory for analyses of potential contaminants, and comparing analytical results to Alberta Tier 1 Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines.

In total, the project team oversaw the removal of 5,431 cubic metres of refuse and contaminated soils from the historical landfill. Based on the results of the excavation sampling and supplemental drilling, and the previous environmental investigations completed by others, approximately 80% of the refuse has been removed from the historical landfill.
