Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge – Renewal Options Analysis and Preliminary Rehabilitation Design
Location

The BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure retained Associated Engineering to undertake a condition survey, seismic assessment, and renewal life-cycle analysis to determine the future treatment of the Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge.
Constructed in 1956, it carries two lanes of the Agassiz-Rosedale Highway (Highway 9) over the Fraser River between Agassiz and Rosedale, BC. The 1.87 km long structure has 86 concrete/steel composite girder approach spans and 6 truss spans over the main river. It has a number of unique structural elements and systems along its length that presented challenges and opportunities to extend its economic life.

Associated Engineering with sub-consultants performed a detailed close-proximity inspection of all spans, a detailed deck inspection and condition survey, a coatings evaluation, a seismic assessment and retrofit strategy, a soils investigation, and developed a range of options to rehabilitate and improve the safety and future function of the bridge. Cost estimates for the various upgrading and future maintenance scenarios were developed, complete with life-cycle costing, cash flows, and risk scenarios.
Based on our investigations and option development, we presented a “renewal options” report complete with clear recommendations on works and timing to maintain and improve this critical bridge for several decades into the future.
