Together with Graham Contractors, Brybil Projects, a subsidiary of Associated Engineering, was awarded the design-build contract for the Dayton Pedestrian Bridge in Kelowna.
The new pedestrian and cycling overpass, over Highway 97 between Burtch Road and Spall Road, enhances connectivity between the highly populated commercial / office centre south of the highway, with sports fields, natural green space and the Parkinson Recreation Centre on the north side. The structure has become one of the City’s most prominent features for residents and tourists as it spans Highway 97.
The City of Kelowna sought a team with the passion, creativity and technical capabilities to develop a landmark structure, and with the strict controls to deliver this project within the required schedule and limited budget. Our design solution satisfied multiple design elements and goals, including environmental improvement, safety, resource conservation, a fixed construction budget, constructability, and functionality. The importance of future maintenance through the varying seasons and years was also very important, as ongoing maintenance costs are borne by the City. As a result, all visible steel work was either painted or galvanized to maximize durability and minimize ongoing and future maintenance.

Project Highlights
The team focused on a sustainable solution that respects natural systems and integrates them into the design. The slender structural form, materials and colours are consistent with the semi-arid nature of Kelowna. The orientation of the structure minimized potential impact on Mill Creek, by moving temporary and permanent works away from the creek.
Brybil Projects provided site supervision and construction services as part of the design-build agreement. Design and construction was completed in less than six months, with the project finished according to scope, on schedule, and within City of Kelowna’s budget.
