Contaminated Sites Management

The Northwest Territories Housing Corporation retained Associated Environmental to conduct Designated Substance Surveys (hazardous building materials surveys) at 57 housing units in Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk, Aklavik, Paulatuk, Ulukhaktok, and Sachs Harbour.

The surveys were required as part of due diligence practices to identify environmental and human health risks associated with the following designated substances: asbestos-containing material (ACM), lead-based paint (LBP), polychlorinated biphenyls, mercury, urea formaldehyde foam insulation, ozone-depleting substances, glycol, and mould. Associated also assessed the above-ground storage tanks on site.

Project Highlights

The objective of each survey was to identify, through visual inspection or intrusive sample collection and laboratory analysis, the designated substances, their locations within each housing unit, and the estimated quantities that require removal as hazardous or special waste.

The Northwest Territories Housing Corporation used the results from the surveys to prepare work plans and tender specifications.
