Associated Engineering (AE) was retained by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) to undertake the planning, detailed design, and construction oversight for the Runway 06-24 Extension and airside civil infrastructure improvements at the Inuvik Mike Zubko Airport.
The airside runway, taxiway and apron pavements are showing considerable surficial distress relating to permafrost degradation. Previous geotechnical studies have concluded the original permafrost regime beneath the airport surface structures has changed. The runway extension scope of work involves undertaking the planning, design and construction of the proposed Runway 06-24 extension to 2743m (9000ft).
The scope includes the runway and strip, grading, drainage, granular base, pavement structure, relocation of NavCanada facilities, airfield electrical, pavement markings and aircraft turnarounds at each end of the runway. The scope importantly also includes undertaking climate change projections and developing climate design data inputs for the new runway taking future climate change into account.

Runway extension
The Civil Infrastructure Improvements Project involves four major objectives widening the Runway Safety Area to current Transport Canada standards; widening Taxiway C to accommodate Aircraft Group Number (AGN) IV; improving airport surface drainage to direct it away from runway and taxiway infrastructure and prevent ponding water from impacting the permafrost regime and remediating the roughness on Taxiway D.
