With one of the few paved airfields in the Arctic, the Churchill Airport is essential for many services in the North.
Associated Engineering was contracted to deliver a long-term solution to surface deficiencies with the runway and taxiway. Using 3D scanning and other technology, Associated Engineering determined the underlying problem was permafrost deterioration caused by improper drainage. This issue had not been identified previously. The solution included drainage improvement and maintenance recommendations, asphalt treatment and application techniques, and installing monitoring cannisters in the runway. This work will advance research into new applications for northern paved and unpaved airstrips.
