The Slave Lake region was severely affected by wildfires in May 2011 that destroyed a significant portion of the town. The infrastructure was further deteriorated due to the intensive residential and commercial reconstruction efforts. Associated Engineering was retained to provide consulting services, design, procurement and construction services for the four-year infrastructure recovery efforts, including rehabilitation of:
- 3,100 m of watermain
- 930 m of sanitary sewer
- 810 m of storm sewer
- 120 misc. utility spot repairs
- 8,600 m of walkway
- 3,900 m of curb
- 93,000 m2 of roadway.
The project had a fixed budget and cost control measures were essential. The project required an effective procurement and phasing strategy to consider homeowner access, transportation routes disruption, and ongoing utility services. The project team selected a construction management approach, somewhat unique for urban rehabilitation, to enable more flexibility and collaboration and successfully deliver this project.
