The Mission Bridge is a four-lane, 1 kilometre long crossing of the Fraser River in Abbotsford, BC. Opened in 1973, the bridge is in a high seismic zone and a critical lifeline link in BC’s disaster recovery network. The award recognized the team’s innovative use of ultra-high performance concrete for jacketing bridge piers to achieve high seismic capacity. Using ultra-high performance concrete required only a thin jacket on the large concrete columns, which was cost-effective and visually appealling, compared to other options. The project demonstrated a new application for ultra-high performance concrete.

In the inaugural North American awards program hosted by the American Concrete Institute, the Mission Bridge Seismic Retrofit project won first place in the Repair & Restoration category.
