The City of Toronto retained Associated Engineering to provide engineering services and contract administration services for the detailed deck hammer sounding inspection and rehabilitation of the deck for Overlea Blvd. Bridge.
The bridge is a five span concrete deck on seven equally spaced steel plate girders with a total span length of 207 metres, crossing the West Don River and a recreational trail at Seton Park. It is considered as an essential east-west link of the City with an AADT of 31,000+ and carrying multiple TTC bus major routes.
Approximately 10% of the bridge deck soffit was in fair to poor condition, with delamination and spall throughout, posing a potential hazard for recreational pathway users underneath. Thus, protection mesh was installed. A railing enhancement design using stainless steel cables was included in the tender for pedestrian safety. Associated Engineering provided access plans and obtained permits from RNFP and TRCA.

Associated Engineering retained a subconsultant, Bridge Check Canada, to complete a detailed hammer sounding inspection of the entire soffit and a ground-penetration-radar (GPR) scanning on top of the deck to confirm the up-to-date deck condition. It was determined to repair the deck soffit spalling with shotcrete and top of deck with high early strength concrete mix, new waterproofing and wearing surface. The soffit shotcrete repairs were tested for quality and proved to be cost effective over conventional form and pump method.
